The San Diego FBA’s membership will vote via email in October to elect the new Members of the Board of Directors.

San Diego FBA and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California are pleased to present the Judith N. Keep Federal Practice Seminar. This year we will celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Keep Seminar and feature welcome remarks, a special video tribute to Judge Keep, a keynote address from Administrative Presiding Justice Judith McConnell of the California Court of Appeal, and panel presentations by several Southern District of California District Judges and Magistrate Judges. The panels will focus on various aspects of pretrial and trial practice, including civility and ethics in high-stakes litigation, best practices for mediation before Magistrate Judges, motion practice in federal court, and evidentiary rules at trial.

 

Rewind: Event Highlights

About 150 people tuned in to hear Dean Chemerinsky recount the momentous October 2023–2024 Supreme Court term over Zoom on July 22, 2024. He discussed significant cases concerning abortion rights, administrative law authority, criminal law, the First Amendment right to free speech, the Second Amendment, and litigation relating to former President Donald Trump. Community & National Updates:

 

From the hanging chad to allegations of stolen elections, court cases and news reports reflect the uncertainty that surrounds one of the basic principles of the democratic process – voting in a free and fair election. Where can we go from here? On August 27 at the Carter–Keep Courthouse, hear from expert panelists who will discuss the role of the media and the justice system in keeping the foundation of our government intact and the risks we face when election coverage goes beyond critical thinking and into conspiracy theorizing. The event will begin with a reception from 5 to 6 p.m., and with the panel from 6 to 7 p.m. Presented by the San Diego Superior Court, San Diego County Bar Association and San Diego Society of Professional Journalists.

 

Join the FBA’s International Law Section on August 30 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., for a program that will include a “how to” with practical information on careers in international law that may make it possible to work in your field of passion and still be able to enjoy quality of life and earn a living.

 

Join the Immigration Law Section’s Newer Lawyers Division for a discussion on the ins and outs of Permanent Labor Certification (PERM) on September 5 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

 

This qui tam program on September 11 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. will focus on who the parties to qui tam actions are and will include an advanced discussion of how the inclusion or exclusion of certain parties affects qui tam cases. Among other topics, this program will discuss the pros and cons of adding individuals as defendants, states as plaintiffs, and a deep dive into issues relating to private equity firms as defendants. The program will also include discussions relating to multiple qui tam actions and partial intervention scenarios, among others. The program will include panelists and perspectives in an interactive format from counsel for relators, the defense, and the federal government.

 

Join the FBA’s Federal Career Service Division on September 11 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., for a program on Implicit Bias. This webinar will feature an interactive discussion on bias and inclusivity in a seminar setting. The objective is individual personal bias reconciliation with and an introspective revelation of deep-seated beliefs, impressions, and notions of cultural differences among people.

 

This one-hour CLE on September 25 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. will cover the basics of due process rights for noncitizens in immigration court, including what process is due to noncitizens in immigration court, where those due process rights come from, and how attorneys can best protect those due process rights before the immigration court and beyond.
