By Sarah Goldwasser*

Two San Diego FBA chapter members recently won national awards from the Federal Bar Association. Please join us in congratulating Andrew Haden and Mary Cile Glover-Rogers!

Andrew Haden: Peter J. Mazza Outstanding Federal Lawyer Award

Andrew Haden

The Peter J. Mazza Outstanding Federal Lawyer award, named in honor of beloved former First Assistant U.S Attorney and former San Diego FBA President Pete Mazza, is reserved for attorneys with exceptional dedication to public service. The award, which includes a charitable donation in the name of the recipient, is a memorial to the outstanding, inspirational, and selfless leadership that Pete Mazza demonstrated throughout his life.

This year’s recipient of the Mazza award is a former First Assistant U.S. Attorney himself: Andrew Haden. “I am humbled and honored, beyond words,” Andrew said upon receiving the award. “Pete was one of my first assigned mentors at the U.S. Attorney’s Office. It wasn’t long before he was one of my best friends.”

Andrew, who has also served as Acting U.S. Attorney, is a San Diego native and attended University City High School. Upon graduation from Stanford, Andrew served as an Officer in the United States Navy for five years, which included two overseas deployments. After graduating from USD School of Law, Andrew clerked for U.S. District Judge Thomas J. Whelan, and then joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office through the Department of Justice Honors Program. Andrew’s titles throughout his career, besides FAUSA and Acting USA, include Criminal Chief, Violent Crimes & Human Trafficking Section Chief, Trial Team Leader, Senior Litigation Counsel, and Project Safe Neighborhoods Coordinator. Andrew is also a longtime participant in Project LEAD and the Veteran’s Diversion program. His professional commitment to public safety is evidenced by his investigations and prosecutions into violent crime, public corruption, firearms trafficking, and child exploitation.

Andrew is regarded in the federal family as a warm, gracious, and intelligent leader. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Andrew’s pride is in his community service: he has volunteered his time in countless leadership titles, from chair of Stanford University’s Alumni Board of Directors to coach of local little league baseball, soccer, and basketball teams. In between teaching law school courses and mentoring former gang members in re-entry programs, Andrew views his role on the YCMA’s Advisory Board as among his most meaningful contributions. He is an active YMCA member and was a founder of a father–daughter programming group. Andrew’s leadership and spirit of public service are recognized by the Pete Mazza Award.

Mary Cile Glover-Rogers: The Younger Federal Lawyer Award

Mary Cile Glover-Rogers

The Younger Federal Lawyer Award recognizes Mary Tommicile Glover-Rogers as one of its 2024 recipients. Mary Cile, who is the Immediate Past President of the FBA’s San Diego Chapter, is an accomplished public servant and asset to the community.

Mary Cile joined the Southern District of California’s U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Civil Division in May 2023, after clerking for the U.S. District Judge Ruth B. Montenegro. As an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Civil Division, she hit the ground running and took on leadership roles in complex civil matters. Recently, she recovered millions in compensation for the U.S. Navy after a private aircraft hit and destroyed an Osprey helicopter. She also represents the United States in defense litigation, ensuring just resolution in civil suits.

Prior to clerking for Judge Montenegro in both El Centro and San Diego, Mary Cile worked in private practice for an AmLaw 100 firm. Mary Cile is a graduate of the University of Mississippi and the University of Missouri School of Law. When she began federal service five years ago in the Southern District of California, Mary Cile became involved in the San Diego FBA, and served in several leadership roles including Vice President of Legal Education and President. During her tenure, she oversaw events to mentor law students, promote inclusiveness and civility, and encourage diversity in federal public service. Mary Cile’s around-the-clock kind demeanor, effective advocacy skills, and effortless leadership make her a natural recipient of the Younger Federal Lawyer Award.

* Sarah Goldwasser is a Public Relations Committee Member of the Federal Bar Association’s San Diego Chapter. She represents the United States in criminal matters as an Assistant United States Attorney. Before joining the Department of Justice Department, she clerked in the Southern District of Texas.
