Courtroom Conversation with U.S. Magistrate Judge Steve Chu

The San Diego Chapter of the Federal Bar Association extends its gratitude to Magistrate Judge Steve Chu and his Chambers’ staff for sharing his insight and guidance with the members of the legal community who gathered in his courtroom on July 9, 2024. Senior Deputy County Counsel Robert Ortiz moderated the event. 

 

Judge Chu reflected on his 20 years of practice and path to the bench. Discussion included the importance of mentors in fostering his professional growth, and how his background gives him a keen belief in the American legal system. 

 

Judge Chu reminded practitioners of the importance that their work has on the lives of their clients. He discussed how he sees these impacts through his work on the bench. 

 

His tips for practitioners included the importance of being prepared, respectful, civil, and kind. He encouraged practitioners to get ahead of problematic issues in their cases early.
