On July 22, 2024, the San Diego Chapter presented “2024 Supreme Court Case Review Featuring Dean Erwin Chemerinsky.”

Dean Chemerinsky is the Dean of Berkeley Law, where he serves as the Jesse H. Choper Distinguished Professor of Law. Prior to assuming this position he was the founding dean of the University of California, Irvine School of Law, and a professor at Duke Law School, University of Southern California Law School, and DePaul Law School. He is the author of 19 books and over 200 law review articles. He frequently argues appellate cases, including in the United States Supreme Court. In 2022, he was the President of the Association of American Law Schools.

Approximately 150 people tuned in to hear Dean Chemerinsky recount the momentous October 2023–2024 Supreme Court term over Zoom. He discussed significant cases concerning abortion rights, administrative law authority, criminal law, the First Amendment right to free speech, the Second Amendment, and litigation relating to former President Donald Trump. Dean Chemerinsky also previewed several upcoming cases from the October 2024 term. Finally, Dean Chemerinsky answered questions from webinar participants, including how to interpret the Supreme Court’s jurisprudence on administrative agencies’ authority, whether the Court will be subjected to enforceable ethics rules, and how young lawyers can get involved to ensure the preservation of constitutionally-guaranteed civil rights through their advocacy.
