On June 30, 2023, the U.S. District Court judges appointed Steve B. Chu as a full-time U.S. Magistrate Judge. He is the first Asian American to serve as a magistrate judge in the Southern District. Read more about Judge Chu here.

Please join us for the Nineteenth Annual Judith N. Keep Federal Practice Seminar, dedicated to the memory of former U.S. District Judge Judith N. Keep. This year’s seminar will feature a special video tribute featuring Hon. Ruben B. Brooks (Ret.), and panel presentations by several Southern District of California District Judges and Magistrate Judges.
The panels will focus on various aspects of pretrial and trial practice, including effective use of evidence, success with the Magistrate Judges, lesser-known strategies in federal court, and meeting the new District Judges.

Registration is open until July 31 to compete in the Mock Markman Competition for attorneys with six or less years of in practice. Participants will be assigned into teams of two to brief and argue the construction of four claim terms before judges of the United States District Court.

Community and National FBA Updates:
San Diego FBA Board Member Jenn French and attorney Christian Andreu-von Euw of the California Lawyers Association Federal Courts Committee recently interviewed Judge Andrew G. Schopler. In this interview, Judge Schopler describes what led him to consider becoming a judge, his experience deploying on active duty in Afghanistan while serving as a U.S. Magistrate Judge, and his views on what makes a successful advocate.
The FBA will make appointments to its many committees for service beginning in fall of 2023. The FBA committees are charged with fulfilling our mission and providing benefits to our members and the public they serve. Apply by August 1, 2023.
